Themes

Two themes I would really enjoy practicing and studying this year are looking inward into the human experience and art as art. The reason I chose looking inward into the human experience is I want to study how to create emotion. Especially with animation I want to be able to make something inhuman have human like emotions. The best films are ones where you emotionally connect with the characters and what they are going through, so I plan to attempt just that. I already practiced this some with my animations last year, but this year I want to try harder and make the character's emotions more complex. I mostly focused on loneliness last year but I want to broaden my horizons and even try this with film. Most of my films have not focused enough on the characters' feelings and they more focused on the plot so I want to change this. I want to have a relatable character that the viewer can connect to, so the film is more personable and less surface level. Secondly, I want to study art as art. I really enjoy avant garde or experimental films and animations that are different. They make you think a different way than most films do and take new approaches to ideas which, makes them original in their own way. These sorts of film always stand out and I hope I can also do this with my work. I am especially looking forward to trying this with animation. You can literally do anything with animation and I want to cross the boundaries and try something completely new. I don't know what that is yet but I am excited to try. Also with film, you are allowed more freedom when making something experimental. You can use all sorts of camera movements and angles not used in normal film and try certain effects a normal film wouldn't use either. Most of all I just enjoy the freedom in my work to do what I want, so that is why I believe this theme is perfect for me. I hope to learn and study these styles well enough for me to use them well and make work I am proud of.
